It takes one colony of honey bees (around 30,000 bees) to pollinate an acre of fruit trees. Pollination success increases if there are more honey bees present at the time of peak flowering.

The value of bees pollinating fruit, vegetables and legumes is 10 times the value of honey produced (more than $1 billion in Canada).

A colony of honey bees in early spring has 10,000 to 15,000 bees.

A colony of honey bees in summer may have 60,000 or more worker bees (undeveloped females) who do all the work. There will also be several hundred drones (male bees) and just one queen, who may lay 2,000 eggs per day during her busy season.

The average life of a honey bee during the working season is about six weeks. A worker bee gathers in her entire life less than one gram of honey.

A single colony can produce 45 kg of extra honey and this is what is harvested by the beekeeper. Some beekeepers in Alberta and Saskatchewan regularly harvest more than 136 kilos of honey per colony.

Bees fly the equivalent of more than twice around the world to gather a kilo of honey.

A honey bee flies up to 24 km/h and its wings beat 200 times per second.

The sudden unexplained loss of millions of bees in the Niagara region – up to 90 per cent in some commercial colonies – has prompted Ontario beekeepers to ask experts at the University of Guelph to investigate.

The move comes amid the mysterious disappearance of millions of bees in the U.S., in a phenomenon so unusual that it has spawned a new phrase – "Colony Collapse Disorder."

I haven't heard of anything strange in our area in Manitoba as yet but as the article notes it is very early. I do know that a neighbour's bees thought that there was global warming here and ended up frozen in the snow! Well a few of them, most stayed in the hive like sensible bees.


In Canada, the problem seems to be confined so far to the Niagara region but is still early days for beekeepers in the West, who won't know the extent of the damage until they unwrap their hives later this month.

"About 80 or 90 per cent of the beekeepers in the Niagara region have had substantial losses," George Dubanow, president of the Niagara Beekeepers Association, said in an interview yesterday.

"This number is unparalleled. A typical winter loss is between 10 and 20 per cent."

That has some Niagara region fruit growers worried in the weeks leading up to the May pollination period because bees don't just make honey. They also play a vital role in pollinating everything from cherries to pear trees in Ontario, hybrid canola in Western Canada and blueberries in New Brunswick.

Theories about why the bees are dying run the gamut from pesticides to poor weather and even radio waves from cell phone transmission towers.

Experts in Canada are reluctant to blame "Colony Collapse Disorder" for what's happened so far in Niagara.

"At this point we haven't seen the type of die-offs we're seeing in the U.S. although we're all certainly very concerned about it, said Steve Pernal, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, in northern Alberta.

Officials in Ontario blame poor weather conditions last fall and the Varroa Destructor mite, a deadly parasite that first showed up in the early '90s.

"The reason I say that is you can almost draw a line from St. Thomas to the south side of Hamilton. Below that they've lost 70 per cent of their bees with some individuals losing 100 per cent. North of that line, thank goodness, the bees are quite normal," explained Doug McRory, an apiarist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Winter die-offs aren't unusual for beekeepers. And while 20 per cent is the average, sometimes an individual beekeeper's losses will be much higher, experts said.

However, the U.S. has now received reports from 24 states citing widespread losses. And more worrisome is the unexplained disappearance of the adult bees, a report to Congress two weeks ago stated.

It's as if the bees flew away and never came back, highly uncharacteristic behaviour, the report by U.S. agriculture analyst Renee Johnson said.

"The odds are some neurotoxin is what's causing it," said David VanderDussen, a beekeeper in Frankford, near Trenton, whose company NOD Apiary Products Ltd. recently won a provincial award for developing an environmentally friendly mite repellent.

Len Troup, a fruit grower in Jordan Station who also chairs the Ontario Tender Fruit Producers, says farmers in the area starting renting commercial bees to pollinate the cherry and pear crops, starting around mid-May.

Niagara beekeepers say the problem in the U.S. is driving up the price of Queen Bees imported from New Zealand to replenish the hives.

I wrote a paper on Bacillus Thuringus in 1996re a new 1994 amazing bacteria that kills crop eating bugs. My theme was that BT would add 12% to the food chain. My professor Dr Sheppard did not agree as he was concerned of the BT finding it's way into forest adjacent to the farms and streams etc. therefore killing off populations of bugs we need as well as bugs in the soil,rivers lakes etc.

IN a nut shell I believe that bees may be poisoned by BT. BT is a bacterium that can pass from plant species like tomatoes to corn to cotton and used heavily in the States It can change it's DNA. This is a Billion dollar pesticide industry.

Since BT is a bacteria that only affects caterpillars, it is very safe to
use.
Try it instead of poisons on your tent worms, army worms, tomato

Agricultural biotechnology companies have made huge inroads into the marketplace for their GMO (genetically modified organisms) products. The New York Times recently reported that Monsanto expects U.S. farmers to plant 20 million acres of its Roundup Ready soybeans -- up from 9 million acres in 1997. Monsanto is introducing Roundup Ready corn in 1998 and expects 600,000 acres to be planted in the U.S. Additionally, the company predicts that 40 percent of the U.S. cotton crop will be planted to some type of GMO cotton seed. (GMO corn which contains a gene from the bacteria, Bacillus thuringus) is also in widespread use due to its ability to actually produce a pesticide which kills the European corn borer, a common crop pest. Crop producers in other countries are also jumping on the bandwagon including those in Argentina and South Africa.

The newest tool for corporate domination of agriculture -- to the detriment of farmers and consumers -- is biotechnology. It "will make the Industrial Revolution pale by comparison," Austen Cargill, top scientist at Minneapolis-based Cargill, Inc., told the New York Times. The fact is that we are probably eating gene altered food every day.


The FDA has bowed to corporate pressure in refusing to require the labeling of food containing GMO products despite the fact that public health is threatened by carcinogenic, allergenic or toxic substances which may be unintended consequences of gene adulteration.

see BT causes re BT toxins paralyze the digestive tract but of course just like DDT BT does not effect humans or ????????? is BT now in the food chain ????????? corn fed what ever . how about itchy eyes etc. ????

why is there a caution stated in using ;----- do not use around open wounds , eyes and do not inhale .
